Preparing for hibernation
As winter draws closer here in Australia some of our ants are entering their hibernation phase. In the photo above you can see BETTY our second Myremecia fulvipes queen is readying her colony for hibernation.
They start to huddle together, have little to no eggs or brood and will remain in this state for a few months until the warmer weather appears.
We generally like to keep some sugars available during this time in case of a few workers that might awake early.
In an unfortunate case of bad timing, a live TV interview in Australia has been interrupted by a mating swarm of ants during their nuptial flight.
