The stunning Polyrhachis ammon

We were lucky enough to stumble upon lots of Polyrhachis ammon colonies whilst out looking for ants last week.

We managed to scoop up an unlucky individual who became our model for the photos above.

These ants are fairly common on the east coast of Australia and are a great looking ant. But this specimen in particular is extremely beautiful. The deep gold gaster and the silver shimmer on the thorax contrast against the jet black head and legs.

We'll be on the lookout for a queen come late spring!
